Midterm and Final Grade Calculator - Course Average and the Final Score You Need
Calculate your course average and the final you need
Passed: the average reaches the passing score.
Average = midterm × midterm weight + final × final weight, divided by the total weight. The 40/60 split and the passing average of 50 are the most common defaults in Turkish universities; many also require a minimum final score, often 50, which the optional field enforces. Faculties set their own rules in the regulation on education and examinations.
How midterm and final grades combine
Most university courses grade with a midterm and a final weighted into one average. In Turkish universities the midterm usually counts 40 percent and the final 60, so a 60 in the midterm and a 70 in the final give 66, and the course is passed when the average reaches the threshold in the faculty's regulation, commonly 50 in absolute grading or a letter-grade cut in relative grading. Many regulations add a second condition: a minimum final score, typically 50, below which the course is failed even if the weighted average would pass. This calculator applies both rules with editable weights and thresholds and tells you the final score you still need.
Steps
- 1 Enter your midterm score and the weights your course uses; 40 and 60 are the defaults.
- 2 Enter the final score to see the average, or leave it blank to see the final you need for the passing average.
- 3 If your faculty requires a minimum final score, enter it; the needed final rises to that minimum when the average alone would allow less.
The final you need
The needed final is the passing average times the total weight, minus the midterm times its weight, divided by the final weight. With a 60 midterm and 40/60 weights, a passing average of 50 needs only 43.33 in the final; a target of 70 needs 76.67. If the result exceeds 100 the course cannot be passed in this sitting. With a 40/60 split and a passing average of 50 that never happens, since even a zero midterm needs 83.33; with a passing average of 70 it happens whenever the midterm is below 25.
Minimum final scores
A minimum final score protects the exam from being skipped on the strength of a good midterm. With a 90 midterm the weighted average would pass with a final of only 23.33, but a faculty requiring at least 50 in the final fails the course below 50. Enter the minimum in the optional field and the calculator both checks your final against it and raises the needed final to the minimum.
Relative grading and letter grades
In relative grading the average is converted to a letter grade by comparing it with the class distribution, so the passing cut can shift from term to term, usually between 45 and 60. Enter the cut your faculty publishes as the passing average; the calculator works with any threshold.
Limits of this calculator
Courses with several graded items, quizzes, homework or projects, need their weights added into the midterm or final share first. The faculty's regulation and the course syllabus are the authority on weights, thresholds and make-up rules.
