My WebP has a transparent background — what happens?

Those areas are filled with the background colour you choose before converting. White is the default, but black, light grey and a custom picker are right there. If you would rather keep the transparency, use the WebP to PNG converter instead — PNG supports an alpha channel and JPG never will.

Why did my file get bigger instead of smaller?

WebP usually compresses better than JPG, so a well-optimised WebP can grow when re-encoded as JPG — especially at a high quality setting. Lowering the quality slider to 80 normally brings it back below the original. If size is what you care about most, the WebP you already have is probably the smaller file.

Does the conversion happen on your servers?

No. Your browser decodes the WebP and re-encodes it as JPG locally, so the file never leaves your device and there is nothing for us to store. That is also why the conversion is instant and why there is no limit on how many images you process.

Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?

You will get the first frame only, as a still picture. JPG has no concept of animation, so the motion cannot survive the conversion. To keep it moving you would need GIF, which is available on the general image converter page.

About Converting WebP to JPG

JPG is the closest thing the world has to a universal photo format. Every phone, printer, photo kiosk, e-mail client and word processor made in the last thirty years opens it without complaint — which is exactly why people convert WebP images to it. The catch is that JPG is also lossy, so this particular conversion deserves a little more care than most.

Two lossy formats in a row

Most WebP files on the web are lossy, and JPG is lossy too. Converting one to the other means compressing an already-compressed image a second time, which photographers call generation loss. At quality 90 it is invisible in practice; below about 75 the two rounds of compression start to compound, and the artefacts of the original WebP get amplified rather than hidden. If you can, keep the WebP as your master copy and treat the JPG as a delivery copy.

Transparent WebP files need a decision

WebP can store an alpha channel; JPG cannot. If your file has transparent areas — a logo, a cut-out product shot, a sticker — they have to become a solid colour. Pick that colour deliberately using the swatches: white for documents and print, black for dark slides, or a custom shade matching the page it will sit on. If the transparency is the point of the image, convert it to PNG instead and keep the alpha intact.

When JPG is the right target

Choose JPG when the destination is out of your control: a print shop, a government upload form, an old CMS, a photo frame, someone else’s laptop. Choose PNG instead when the image has transparency or contains text and sharp graphics. And if the image is going onto a modern website, the honest answer is to leave it as WebP — you would be trading away the very compression that made the file small.
