Is SHA-1 still safe to use?

SHA-1 is no longer considered cryptographically secure. In 2017, Google's SHAttered attack demonstrated the first practical SHA-1 collision, meaning two different inputs can produce the same hash. For security-critical uses such as digital signatures, certificates, or password hashing, you should use SHA-256 or SHA-512 instead.
