Is SHA-256 safe to use for passwords?

SHA-256 alone is not recommended for password hashing because it is too fast — attackers can compute billions of hashes per second using GPUs. For passwords, use dedicated algorithms like bcrypt, Argon2, or PBKDF2 which are intentionally slow. SHA-256 is excellent for file integrity checks, digital signatures, and data verification.

Can SHA-256 be reversed or decrypted?

No. SHA-256 is a one-way function — it is computationally infeasible to reverse a hash back to its original input. This is by design.
