Split a PDF

The file is processed on your own device and is never uploaded.

Taking a document apart

Splitting is what you reach for when only part of a document should travel: one invoice out of a monthly batch, a single certificate from a bundle of scans, the chapter a colleague asked for. Sending the whole file instead is the easy mistake, and it usually shares more than intended.

Using it in three steps

  1. 1 Drop the PDF you want to take apart.
  2. 2 Choose whether every page becomes its own file, or type the pages you want.
  3. 3 Press Split and download the ZIP. The number of parts is shown before you download it.

Writing a page range

Pages are counted the way you would say them out loud: the first page is 1, not 0. Write single numbers, ranges, or both together — 1-3, 5, 8- means the first three pages, the fifth, and everything from the eighth onwards. A range that runs backwards or names a page the file does not have is refused rather than quietly corrected, because guessing what you meant is how the wrong page ends up in someone's inbox.

Why the result is a ZIP

A split can produce dozens of files, and browsers block a page that tries to start dozens of downloads in a row — the second or third one usually disappears without a warning. Packing them into a single archive makes the download one click and, more importantly, makes it verifiable: the part count is on screen before you save, so a missing piece is obvious immediately rather than a week later.

Splitting PDFs - frequently asked questions

Yes, but with the page-removal tool rather than this one. Set it to keep only the pages you name and you get a single PDF containing exactly those. Splitting is for making many files; keeping is for making one shorter file. They sound similar and do opposite things.

Compress PDF Rebuild a PDF with a tidier structure and no metadata. Text-heavy files shrink; documents made of large scans barely change, and the tool says so.

Watermark PDF Add a diagonal text watermark like DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL to a PDF. Choose the wording and how strong it looks; the file is never uploaded.

Other PDF tools

Merge PDF Combine several PDF files into one, in the order you choose. Each page keeps its own size, and the files are never uploaded anywhere.
Delete PDF Pages Remove the pages you do not need, or keep only the ones you do. Type a range like 1-3, 7 and the rest of the document is left untouched.
Reorder PDF Pages Move pages into the order you want while looking at them. Every page is drawn as a thumbnail, so you rearrange what you see, not numbers.
Rotate PDF Turn sideways or upside-down pages the right way up. Rotate the whole document or just the pages you name, and the change is saved into the file.
Image to PDF Put photos and scans into a single PDF, in the order you choose. Pick a page size or let each page match its image, and nothing is uploaded.
