Why is the PNG so much bigger?

Because it stores every pixel individually rather than approximating them. JPEG achieves its small size by simplifying areas the eye barely notices; PNG refuses to simplify anything. On photographs — which have almost no repeating patterns — that costs three to five times the space. On flat graphics the gap is much smaller, which is why PNG suits logos and JPG suits photos.

Will the background become transparent?

No, and this trips up a lot of people. PNG is capable of transparency, but a JPG has none to carry over, so the result is fully opaque. To get a transparent background you have to erase it yourself in an image editor — the conversion only gives you a format that can hold the transparency once you create it.

Is this the right choice for my website?

Almost certainly not. Replacing a JPG with a PNG on a web page makes it several times heavier for no visual benefit, which slows the page and hurts your Core Web Vitals. If you want smaller images for a site, convert to WebP instead — it keeps the quality and cuts the weight rather than adding to it.

About Converting JPG to PNG

Let us be straight about this one: converting a photograph from JPG to PNG will make the file three to five times larger and will not improve it by a single pixel. There are good reasons to do it anyway — they are just narrower than most pages admit, and it is worth knowing whether yours is one of them.

It cannot restore what JPG threw away

This is the single most common misunderstanding about the conversion. PNG is lossless, so it stores whatever it is given perfectly — but what it is given is already a JPG, complete with the compression artefacts baked into it. Blocky skies, halos around branches, smeared fine detail: all of it is copied faithfully into the PNG. Lossless means nothing new is lost, not that anything is recovered.

When it genuinely helps

Three cases are worth the extra megabytes. First, editing: if you are about to crop, retouch and re-save an image several times, working in PNG stops each save from adding a fresh layer of JPEG damage. Second, systems that simply demand it — some upload forms, print templates, favicon generators and design tools reject JPG outright. Third, images you intend to cut out: you need an alpha-capable format before you can erase a background, and PNG is the usual choice.

What it will not do for you

It will not add transparency. A converted photo has a fully opaque alpha channel, ready to be edited but not magically cut out — removing the background is a separate task for an image editor. It will not sharpen a blurry shot, undo heavy compression, or increase the resolution. And it will not make the picture better for a website: there the PNG is simply a heavier version of what you already had.
