TOEFL iBT Score Calculator - Section Scores, Total and CEFR Level
Work out your TOEFL iBT score
Section scores are exact once you have them; the estimate from answers and ratings uses typical ETS conversions and can differ by a point or two. The CEFR mapping is the one ETS publishes for the 0 to 120 scale.
CEFR levels per section and total (ETS mapping)
| Level | Reading | Listening | Speaking | Writing | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C2 | — | — | — | — | 114–120 |
| C1 | 24–30 | 22–30 | 25–30 | 24–30 | 95–120 |
| B2 | 18–23 | 17–21 | 20–24 | 17–23 | 72–94 |
| B1 | 4–17 | 9–16 | 16–19 | 13–16 | 42–71 |
How the TOEFL iBT is scored
The TOEFL iBT has four sections, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, each reported from 0 to 30 for a total of 0 to 120. Reading and Listening are multiple choice with no penalty for wrong answers; their raw counts are converted to the 30-point scale. Speaking has four tasks rated 0 to 4 and Writing two tasks rated 0 to 5, each by human raters together with automated scoring, and the averages are scaled to 30. ETS maps every section and the total onto CEFR levels, which is what most universities quote.
Steps
- 1 If you have a score report or a practice-test result, enter the four section scores to get the total and the CEFR level of each.
- 2 To estimate from a practice test, switch modes and enter correct answers for Reading and Listening plus the ratings you expect for each speaking and writing task.
- 3 Compare the result with your programme's requirement, which is usually a total plus minimum section scores.
Reading and Listening
Reading has 20 questions and Listening 28 in the current format. The conversion to the 30-point scale is close to proportional: about 17 correct in Reading gives 26, about 23 in Listening gives 25. Forms differ slightly, so treat the estimate as plus or minus a point.
Speaking and Writing
Each speaking task is rated 0 to 4 and the average of the four is multiplied by 7.5; each writing task is rated 0 to 5 and the average of the two is multiplied by 6. Ratings of 3, 3, 3 and 2.5 therefore give about 22 in Speaking, and 4 and 3.5 give about 23 in Writing.
CEFR levels and typical requirements
ETS maps totals of 95 and above to C1, 72 to 94 to B2 and 42 to 71 to B1; 114 and above indicates C2. Undergraduate programmes commonly ask for 80 to 90, competitive graduate programmes 100 or more, often with at least 20 to 22 in Speaking and Writing. Always check the specific programme, since section minimums vary.
MyBest scores and limits of this tool
Score reports also show MyBest scores, the highest section scores from all tests in the last two years, which some institutions accept. This tool adds up one test at a time. Conversions and the CEFR mapping follow published ETS material; the official score report remains the only authoritative result.
