Almost every conversion here runs inside your browser — the image never leaves your device. HEIC is the one exception: it can only be decoded on our server, where the file is deleted within an hour and removed the moment you download it. The result screen always tells you which of the two happened.
Choosing the Right Image Format
Most people reach for a converter because something refused to open, not because they care about codecs. This page takes whatever you have and gives you whatever you need — but a minute spent choosing the right target format saves a second conversion later, so here is the short version of what each one is good at.
How to use the image converter
- 1 Drop in any image — PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP or an iPhone HEIC photo.
- 2 Pick the target format. The format you uploaded disappears from the list, since converting to itself would do nothing.
- 3 Adjust the quality or background colour if they appear, convert, then download.
A quick guide to the formats
JPG is for photographs: it compresses continuous tones beautifully but cannot hold transparency and softens sharp edges. PNG is for logos, screenshots and anything with text or a transparent background — lossless, but noticeably heavier. WebP sits between the two and is ideal for websites, though older software still struggles with it. GIF only makes sense for simple animations. HEIC is what iPhones shoot in; it is excellent storage but almost nothing outside Apple can read it, which is why it is accepted here as a source but never offered as a target.
Where the conversion actually happens
Almost always inside your own browser. The image is decoded, redrawn and re-encoded by your device, which is why the result appears in a fraction of a second and why nothing is uploaded. There is one exception: HEIC. No browser except Safari can read it, so those files are sent to our server, decoded there and deleted within the hour. The result panel tells you which of the two paths was used, every time.
What conversion cannot do
Changing the format never adds detail. The pixel dimensions stay exactly as they were, a blurry photo stays blurry, and quality can only be preserved or reduced — never improved. It also cannot repair a corrupted file or extract more than the first frame of an animation. If a picture looks wrong before conversion, it will look the same afterwards, just in a different wrapper.
