What this converter does
Eight groups of units, converted with the values the definitions actually give rather than the rounded ones people remember. Every unit in the group is shown at once, because the question is often not what one conversion gives but where a number sits among the alternatives.
How to use it
- 1 Pick the group: length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, data size or time.
- 2 Type the amount and choose the two units. The result updates as you type.
- 3 Read the table underneath to see the same amount in every other unit of the group.
Exact factors, not remembered ones
An inch is exactly 0.0254 metres and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, both fixed by international agreement in 1959. Using 2.54 cm or 0.454 kg looks harmless until the error compounds through a chain of conversions and shows up in the third digit of a mile to kilometre result.
| 1 in | = 0.0254 m | exact by definition |
| 1 lb | = 0.45359237 kg | exact by definition |
| 1 mi | = 1609.344 m | exact by definition |
| 1 gal | = 3.785411784 L | US measure, the imperial one differs |
| 1 kn | = 1852 m / 3600 s | exact by definition |
Temperature is not a multiplication
Every other group here converts by multiplying with a factor, but Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so their conversion needs an offset as well. Treating temperature like the rest would quietly produce 0 °C equals 0 °F, which is why it is handled by its own formula rather than a row in the factor table.
Why a gigabyte is not always a gigabyte
Drive manufacturers count in powers of ten, so a terabyte is a million million bytes, while operating systems often count in powers of two. Both are in the list, labelled by the number they use, which is usually the whole reason a new disk shows less space than the box promised.
1 KB = 1 000 B 1 KiB = 1 024 B 1 MB = 1 000 000 B 1 MiB = 1 048 576 B 1 GB = 10^9 B 1 GiB = 1 073 741 824 B
Nothing is sent anywhere
All the factors live in the page, so the conversion is arithmetic done in your browser and there is no request behind it. That also means the page keeps working with no connection once it has loaded, which is handy in a workshop, a warehouse or a kitchen.
