Remove PDF restrictions

The file is processed on your own device and is never uploaded.

Two different locks

PDF has two kinds of password, and confusing them wastes a lot of time. A user password locks the document shut: without it, nobody can see a single page. An owner password leaves the document open to everyone but tells readers to refuse printing, copying or editing. This tool deals with the second kind - the one where you can already read the file but a menu item is greyed out.

Using it in three steps

  1. 1 Drop the restricted PDF - one you can open and read.
  2. 2 Press Remove restrictions. There is nothing to configure - the permissions either exist or they do not.
  3. 3 Download the result and check that printing and copying now work in your reader.

Why the restrictions were never real

When only permissions are set, the page content is not encrypted at all - it is stored in the clear and merely accompanied by a note asking readers to behave. Software that honours the note greys out Print; software that ignores it prints anyway. This is a convention between programs, not a lock, which is why removing the note takes no password and no cracking.

What this tool will refuse

If the PDF demands a password before it will display, the content is genuinely encrypted and this tool cannot read it - the file is refused with a clear message rather than a silent failure. That is not a limitation to work around: a document locked that way was locked by someone who did not want it opened, and getting in requires the password from them.

Removing restrictions - frequently asked questions

That depends on the document and where you are, and it is a question about your rights over the file rather than about the tool. Printing a form you were sent, or copying a paragraph from your own report, is ordinary use. Redistributing someone else's work against their licence is not, and removing a permission flag does not change what the licence says.

Compress PDF Rebuild a PDF with a tidier structure and no metadata. Text-heavy files shrink; documents made of large scans barely change, and the tool says so.

Split PDF Split a PDF into separate files: every page on its own, or only the pages you name. The parts arrive together in one ZIP and nothing is uploaded.
Delete PDF Pages Remove the pages you do not need, or keep only the ones you do. Type a range like 1-3, 7 and the rest of the document is left untouched.
Reorder PDF Pages Move pages into the order you want while looking at them. Every page is drawn as a thumbnail, so you rearrange what you see, not numbers.
Rotate PDF Turn sideways or upside-down pages the right way up. Rotate the whole document or just the pages you name, and the change is saved into the file.
