How the ACT is scored
Since 2025 the ACT has three required sections, English with 50 questions, Math with 45 and Reading with 36, plus an optional Science section with 40. Each section is scaled from 1 to 36 and the composite is the average of English, Math and Reading, rounded to the nearest whole number. Math and Science together give a STEM score. There is no penalty for wrong answers. This tool applies typical raw-to-scale conversions and places the composite on the national percentile distribution.
Steps
- 1 Count your correct answers in each section and enter them. Leave Science blank if you did not take it.
- 2 Read the estimated section scores, composite, STEM score, percentile and the approximate SAT equivalent.
- 3 If you have official scores from several test dates, switch to the second mode and add one row per date to see your superscore.
Composite and STEM
The composite averages the three required sections and rounds half up, so 30, 27 and 28 give 28.33 and a composite of 28, while 30, 27 and 29 give 28.67 and a 29. Science no longer enters the composite; it is reported separately and combined with Math into the STEM score, which some engineering and science programmes look at.
Superscoring
ACT reports a superscore automatically when you have taken the test more than once: the best English, Math and Reading from any date, averaged. Many colleges accept it. The tool computes it the same way and also takes the best Science for the STEM score.
Percentiles and the SAT equivalent
A composite of 20 is close to the median; 24 is around the 74th percentile, 28 the 88th, 32 the 97th and 34 and above the 99th. The SAT equivalents follow the ACT and College Board concordance: 24 corresponds to roughly 1160, 28 to 1300 and 32 to 1420. Use them to compare against colleges that publish only one of the two.
Limits of this estimate
Raw-to-scale conversions are set per test form so that forms of different difficulty give comparable scores; a form may differ from the curves here by a point in either direction. The percentiles and concordance are approximations from recent published data, not the official report of any specific test date.
