How many rounds and matches will there be?

With an even number of teams: one fewer round than teams, and every team plays in every round. With an odd number: as many rounds as teams, and one team rests each round. The total number of matches is always n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 - eight teams means 28 matches over seven rounds.

Is home and away fairly distributed?

Yes, and it is built in rather than hoped for. Every team hosts as close to half its matches as the schedule allows: with an odd number of teams, exactly half; with an even number, at most one game separates any two teams. Which teams get the extra home game is settled by the draw. The naive approach - alternating by round number - looks fair but can leave a team with almost no home games at all.

What happens with an odd number of teams?

One team sits out each round, and the rest is unchanged. The bye moves around so that every team rests exactly once across the season - it is not the same team twice. Nothing needs to be added or removed from your list.

Is the draw actually random?

The team order is shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random source before the fixture is built, using rejection sampling so no team is favoured by rounding. The tool refuses to run rather than fall back to a weaker source - a draw whose result can be guessed is not a draw.

Round robin fixtures - frequently asked questions

A bracket is knockout: you lose once and you are out, so most teams play one or two matches. A round robin is a league: everyone plays everyone, so nobody is eliminated and the table decides the winner. Use the bracket for a one-day tournament and this for a season.
