GRE Score Calculator - Verbal, Quantitative and Writing Scores with Percentiles
Estimate your GRE score
Estimates. The GRE is section-adaptive, so the same number of correct answers can map to a slightly different scaled score depending on the second section's difficulty. Percentiles follow recent ETS tables. Official scores come only from ETS.

How the GRE is scored
The GRE General Test since September 2023 has two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections, 27 questions each measure in total, plus one Analytical Writing task. Verbal and Quantitative are reported from 130 to 170 in one-point steps and the writing task from 0 to 6 in half points. There is no penalty for wrong answers. The second section of each measure is chosen based on your first-section performance, and the scaled score accounts for that difficulty.
Steps
- 1 Enter the number of correct answers across both Verbal sections and both Quantitative sections, 27 questions each, and pick your writing score if you have it.
- 2 Read the estimated scaled scores, the total out of 340 and the percentile for each measure.
- 3 If you already have official scaled scores, switch to the second mode to see totals and percentiles directly.
Why Verbal and Quantitative percentiles differ
A 165 in Verbal is around the 96th percentile, but the same 165 in Quantitative is around the 72nd. Many test takers, especially in engineering and science, score very high in Quantitative, which pushes its percentiles down. Graduate programmes usually publish the measure they care about; compare percentiles, not raw scaled scores, across the two.
The adaptive design
Each measure has two sections. Doing well on the first routes you to a harder second section, where each correct answer is worth more in the final scale. The conversion here is the typical curve across difficulty levels; your actual result can differ by one or two points.
Analytical Writing
One Analyze an Issue task, scored 0 to 6 in half-point steps by a human rater and an automated scorer. A 4.0 is around the median, 4.5 the 78th percentile and 5.0 the 91st. Most programmes weigh it far less than Verbal and Quantitative, but very low scores can raise questions.
Limits of this estimate
The raw-to-scale curves and percentiles are approximations from published ETS material and recent percentile tables, not the official scoring of any specific administration. Use the tool to interpret practice tests and set targets; the official score report is the only authoritative result.
