How the baccalauréat général is graded
Since the 2021 reform the baccalauréat général is a weighted average out of 20 with coefficients adding up to 100. Forty points come from continuous assessment, the yearly averages of première and terminale in the common subjects and in the speciality dropped after première. Sixty points come from final examinations: the French written and oral tests in première, philosophy and the two specialities in terminale, and the grand oral. An average of 10 passes, 8 to 10 gives a second chance at the oral make-up, and 12, 14 and 16 earn the mentions assez bien, bien and très bien.
Steps
- 1 Enter your yearly averages for the continuous-assessment subjects and your marks, or expected marks, for the final examinations.
- 2 Read the weighted average, the mention and the result.
- 3 Change a speciality or the grand oral to see their weight: a point in a speciality moves the average by 0.16, a point in EMC by 0.02.
The coefficients
Each coefficient is the share of the final average in percent. The two specialities kept in terminale weigh 16 each and the grand oral 10, so the three together make 42 percent of the result. The dropped speciality from première still counts 8 through continuous assessment. Among the common subjects, physical education, history-geography, the languages and scientific education carry 6 each and moral and civic education 2.
Mentions and the make-up oral
An average of at least 12 earns assez bien, 14 bien and 16 très bien; from 18 the jury may add its congratulations. Between 8 and 10 you sit the oral make-up in two subjects of your choice among the final-examination subjects, and the better of the two marks replaces the original. Below 8 the bac is failed for that session.
Options and bonuses
Optional subjects such as Latin, Greek, a third language, arts or sport are added with their own coefficients on top of the 100 and can only raise the average. Latin and Greek count with coefficient 3 in a way that only points above 10 are added. This calculator leaves them out, so with options your real average can be slightly higher.
Limits of this calculator
It covers the baccalauréat général only; the technological tracks have different coefficients. Continuous-assessment averages are those recorded by the school, and the jury can adjust a result at deliberation. The official transcript remains the authoritative result.
