Abitur Grade Calculator - Block I, Block II and Final Grade from Points
Calculate your Abitur grade
Bestanden: Gesamtpunktzahl mindestens 300.
KMK formula: Block I = sum × 40 / number of courses (maximum 600), Block II = each of five examinations × 4 (maximum 300), grade = 17/3 − total/180 truncated to one decimal. Federal states add conditions on minimum course results and compulsory subjects that this tool does not check.
Grade to total points
| Final grade | Total points |
|---|---|
| 1,0 | 823 – 900 |
| 1,5 | 733 – 750 |
| 2,0 | 643 – 660 |
| 2,5 | 553 – 570 |
| 3,0 | 463 – 480 |
| 3,5 | 373 – 390 |
| 4,0 | 300 – 318 |
How the Abitur grade is calculated
The Abitur result combines two blocks. Block I collects the course results of the last four half-years, each graded from 0 to 15 points; between 32 and 40 results are counted, and the sum is scaled to a maximum of 600 by multiplying by 40 and dividing by the number of courses. Block II holds the five examinations, written and oral, each worth up to 15 points and multiplied by four, so at most 300. The total of at most 900 is converted to the final grade with the formula 17/3 minus total divided by 180, cut off after the first decimal, which gives 1.0 from 823 points and 4.0 at 300, the minimum needed to pass.
Steps
- 1 Add up the points of the courses you bring into Block I and enter the sum and how many courses it covers.
- 2 Enter the five examination results in points. Block I, Block II, the total and the grade update at once.
- 3 Change an examination result to see how many total points a grade step costs: 18 points per tenth of a grade.
Points and grades
Course grades use the 15-point scale: 15 to 13 points correspond to a 1, 12 to 10 to a 2, 9 to 7 to a 3, 6 to 4 to a 4 and 3 to 1 to a 5; 0 points is a 6 and leaves the course uncounted. Ten points in every course and every examination give 600 total points and a 2.3; thirteen everywhere give 780 and a 1.3.
Block I in detail
Which courses must be included, how many results from each subject and whether advanced courses count double differs by federal state. The scaling to 600 is the same everywhere: with 36 results instead of 40, the sum is multiplied by 40 and divided by 36, so each course weighs slightly more. Results under 5 points are limited in number, usually to a fifth of the counted courses.
Block II and the examinations
Five examinations are the rule in most states, typically three written and two oral or one oral and a presentation. Each counts four times its point value. At least three examinations, including two written ones, must reach 5 points, and Block II as a whole must reach 100 points; states also require minimum results in advanced courses.
Limits of this calculator
The formula is uniform across Germany, but the admission conditions, the choice of courses and the handling of double-weighted advanced courses are state rules that this tool does not model. Use it to see how points translate into a grade; the school's certificate is the authoritative result.
