How UCAS Tariff points work
The UCAS Tariff turns qualification grades into a single points scale so that different qualifications can be compared. An A level grade A* is worth 56 points and an E 16; an AS level is worth 40 percent of an A level; an Extended Project half of an A level. BTEC Nationals map by size, so an Extended Diploma at DDD equals three A levels at grade A. Total points are the sum across your qualifications, and universities that use the Tariff express offers as a minimum total, often with a condition on a specific subject.
Steps
- 1 Add one row per qualification, choose its type and your grade or predicted grade.
- 2 Read the points per row and the total.
- 3 Compare the total with the course's typical offer; if an offer is stated in grades, use the table to translate it.
A level, AS and EPQ values
A levels run from 56 points for A* down to 16 for E in steps of 8. AS levels are 20 for A to 6 for E, and the Extended Project 28 for A* to 8 for E. Three A levels at AAB come to 136 points, ABB to 128 and BBC to 112, the band in which many offers sit.
BTEC Nationals
The Extended Diploma is the size of three A levels, so D*D*D* equals 168 points and DDD 144. The Diploma is two A levels in size, DD being 96, and the Extended Certificate one, D being 48. Mixed programmes of BTEC and A level add up like any other combination.
What the Tariff does not cover
GCSEs, the International Baccalaureate and most overseas qualifications have their own Tariff entries or are assessed separately, and many selective universities make offers purely in grades and ignore points. Scottish Highers, T Levels, Access to HE and music or dance grades also carry Tariff points not included here.
Limits of this calculator
The values follow the published UCAS Tariff for current qualifications. It cannot tell you whether a course accepts a particular combination, requires specific subjects, or caps the contribution of an EPQ or AS level; the course page on the university's site is the authority.
