Same relationship, smaller numbers
A ratio says how two quantities compare, and nothing about how big either of them is. Sixteen to twenty-four and two to three describe exactly the same mixture, the same slope, the same shape of drink. Reducing to the smaller pair does not throw information away; it removes a size that was never part of the claim, which is why the tidied version travels better between a recipe for four and a recipe for forty.
Using it in three steps
- 1 Choose whether you are tidying a ratio up or filling a gap in one.
- 2 Type the numbers you have. Decimals are fine; they get scaled up to whole numbers automatically.
- 3 Read the simplified pair, or the value of x. The decimal line is there for when a single figure is easier to carry.
Why simplifying does not change anything
Simplifying divides both sides by the same number, and dividing both sides by the same number is exactly what leaves a ratio unchanged. That is why 30:45 and 2:3 give the same answer to every question you can ask of them, and why the simplest form is the one worth remembering: it is the smallest whole-number label for a relationship that has infinitely many labels.
Ratios, fractions and rates are the same idea
A fraction, a ratio and a rate are one thing wearing three coats. Three parts water to one part concentrate, three quarters of the bottle being water, and 3 units of water per unit of concentrate all encode the same division. Noticing that means a proportion problem in a kitchen, a workshop and a spreadsheet are the same problem, and the missing-value mode here solves all three the same way.
