How often are the rates updated?

Central banks publish once per working day, each at its own hour. That is why the date can differ from one currency to another. We refresh hourly, which is enough: fetching more often would return identical figures. Weekends and bank holidays have no new publication, so the last working day is shown.

Can I use these rates for an actual transaction?

They are reference rates, not trading rates. Banks and exchange offices add their own spread and fees, so the amount you actually receive will differ. Use this converter to get an accurate picture of the underlying value, then compare it with the quote you are offered.

Why does the date change when I pick a different currency?

Each currency is published by its own central bank on its own schedule, so two currencies can carry different dates. A conversion is only as fresh as its stalest side, so the converter shows the older of the two dates rather than the newer one — that is the honest figure.
